Most recently, Rivers investigated a human smuggling chain in Mexico’s Ciudad Juárez, seeing first-hand how smugglers support people who cross migrants into the United States of America illegally while constantly putting those migrants at great personal risk along the way.

Earlier while in CNN’s Beijing bureau, Rivers reported on primary news stories across the Asia Pacific such as the Hong Kong protests; the US-China trade war; Taiwan’s memorable legalization of same-sex marriage; and China’s association with the Trump government, playing a pivotal part in the network’s coverage of then-Pres. Trump’s foremost official visit to Asia.

In 2018 Rivers was given occasional access to Myanmar during his coverage of the Rohingya refugee crisis, visiting regions of Rakhine State for CNN. In addition to his duties, he communicated to the wives of imprisoned Reuters journalists Kyaw Soe Oo and Wa Lone subsequently to their imprisonment in the country.
