John F. Macarthur Grace To You

John is an author known for his internationally syndicated Christian teaching radio program Grace to You. He has been the pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, since February 9, 1969. He is also the current president of The Master’s University in Santa Clarita, California, and The Master’s Seminary in Los Angeles California. His daily radio program, Grace to You, which is now broadcast throughout much of the world, started as a ministry to provide audio cassettes of his sermons to listeners, and then began to be broadcast in Baltimore, Maryland, starting in 1977. In December 1989, the Bible Broadcasting Network terminated MacArthur’s Grace to You program.

John F Macarthur Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel          A critic of the tendency among some prominent evangelists, like Albert Mohler, to mix the Christian Gospel with the social gospel, MacArthur was a founding signatory of the Declaration on Social Justice and the Gospel, or simply the “Dallas Declaration.” MacArthur said of the social gospel, “Over the years, I have fought a number of polemical battles against ideas that threaten the gospel. I believe that this recent (and surprisingly sudden) detour in search of” social justice “is the most subtle and dangerous threat to date.”

John F Macarthur Psychology

MacArthur is also a Nouthetic Counseling advocate who emphasizes the Bible as a sufficient tool to advise people with mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. MacArthur does not reject all psychological theories and techniques, although he sees some psychology and psychiatry as contrary to the Bible.

He argued that “True psychology (i.e. ‘ the study of the soul ‘) can only be done by Christians since only Christians have the resources to understand and transform the soul. Psychology’s secular discipline is based on godless assumptions and evolutionary foundations and is capable of dealing with people only superficially and only temporally …Modern psychology and the Bible cannot be blended without serious compromise to or utter abandonment of the principle of Scripture’s sufficiency…. ”

His position gave rise to a number of controversies, the most notable of which was the first time an evangelical church employee had ever been sued for misuse. The case was not brought to trial because a judge found the case to be insufficient

John F Macarthur Other Christian movements and other religions

His writings disapprove of the modern Christian “seeker-friendly” movement, as well as ministers running this church service style like Robert Schuller, Bill Hybels, and Rick Warren. He criticized popular pastor Joel Osteen’s Word of Faith, whom he called a quasi-pantheist.

In May 2002, in the midst of significant media and public attention focused on cases of Catholic sex abuse, MacArthur gave the entire system of Roman Catholic priesthood a highly critical message. MacArthur has referred to Catholicism as the “Kingdom of Satan,” and holds to the confession that the Pope is anti-Christ, but the term, he said, “applies to anyone who stands against or in Christ’s place.”

MacArthur states that a person who truly believes in everything that Roman Catholicism teaches does not have saving faith because the Roman Catholic way of salvation is based on works and is a “twisted system of satanic lies” presided over by the Pope.

John F Macarthur Christology

MacArthur first published his belief in the doctrine of “incarnational sonship” in 1983. He defended his views after some criticism in a plenary session of the Independent Fundamental Churches of America’s annual convention in 1989. In an article on MacArthur’s Grace to You website entitled “Reexamining Christ’s Eternal Sonship,” he retraces his views from 1983 onwards, concluding, “I want to state publicly that I have abandoned the doctrine of’ incarnational sonship.’ Careful study and reflection have led me to understand that Scripture is indeed presenting the relationship between God the Father and Christ the Son. I no longer regard Christ’s sonship as a role He assumed in His incarnation.”
