On 5th May 2021, international journalist Christiane Amanpour was diagnosed with stage two ovarian clear cell carcinoma. Amanpour is opening up about how her cancer diagnosis transformed her life. Last April the international journalist and news anchor, 64, was headed to her doctor in London for a yearly screening when a grapefruit-sized cyst was found on her right ovary. “I was astonished,” she informs PEOPLE in this week’s issue, adding, “I instantly asked if it was virulent. They told me, ‘You have to have an MRI, a CT scan, and more blood tests. I can just inform you what we have seen.’ ”

Amanpour publicly acknowledges medical specialists and support from her family including her 22-year-old son Darius John (his father is her former husband, ex- U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James Rubin) for getting her through the hard times. She says, “I allow my family and close friends to look after me.” “That section was a pleasure and an honor and something very unique for me. I allowed myself to be vulnerable and feel those usual emotions.” Six months following her final chemotherapy, Amanpour is already back in the field doing what she likes. In March, she spent fourteen days in Ukraine covering the Russian invasion.
